Google +1 is here! It essentially adds a social feature to Google’s search service – allowing users to recommend a site to other friends. These recommendations will then be relayed to friends via Gmail, Google reader and eventually, Twitter.
Granted, it looks an awful lot like a riposte to Facebooks popular ‘like’ button. There is however one important difference – users will see ‘+1’ on search result pages alongside paid and natural search listings. Google +1 recommendations from your network of friends will also influence how your search results are ranked.
While Google have tried and failed to take on social networks in the past (umm.. anyone still using Google Buzz?) this feature could work as it just adds a social layer to its already incredibly successful search engine. In short, if it takes off, it could become really quite important – transforming how both SEO and paid traffic works.
